Welcome to 2018 from Learning Support

Welcome Back 2018

Dear Parents, 

Welcome to 2018 and another wonderful year of learning.

As the Learning Support Teacher I have the enjoyable job of meeting all the students who are new to the school.  We have a chat and talk about where they've come from, the things they love to do and then a bit about school:  what their strengths are and areas where they'd like to improve skills.  

We do some spelling, reading, comprehension and maths.  This gives the class teachers some added information when working with the new students as other systems and countries have different approaches.

We want the transition to St Luke's to be as smooth and welcoming for all new students. If you're new ask your child if they've been for a visit! If I haven't seen them yet, then I'll have the pleasure next week.

Our First Assembly as School Leaders

Just a few photos of Year 6 running their first Friday Assembly for the year.
It was great to see our new School Captains settle so well into their new roles.  Great work Harry and Chloe!
We also heard about Jamie Smith's amazing Golfing achievements.  Bravo Jamie!
Mrs Bennett spoke about our focus dispositions for the current fortnight of 'Empathy and Listening' and encouraged us to learn to 'walk in another person's shoes', to see things from their point of view.  We then discussed in class how reading novels helps us to do this as we often read books written in the first person, meaning we are hearing the story from their point of view.

Week 1 Over Already!

This week we did a lot of thinking about what kind of learners we want to be this year.  In groups we came up with ideas for our class Essential Agreement.  Common themes of these documents were;

• being responsible and inspiring role models to each other and the younger years
• trying hard and being focused in our learning
• listening to each other with respect
• accepting and learning from our own and others' mistakes
• leaving a legacy of honesty and kindness both in our learning and in the playground.

The photos below include collaborative maths learning, brainstorming in science, quiet reading time, a group spelling activity and our first session learning some Lion King songs in the Music room.  In the spirit of encouraging the students to 'have a go' at auditioning, Mr Young put Mrs Burt, Mrs Ward and Mr Scott on the spot to act out a part of the Lion King script - and I just happened to catch it on video.  I hope you enjoy it as much as the students did.
