Another busy week...

This week Year 6 have been engaging with their learning in many different ways.

We have been looking into the concept of Kanyini in our HSIE unit on indigenous perspectives through online research, and through the lens of the picture book 'The Rabbits' by John Marsden and Shaun Tan.

We have been investigating Pascal's Triangle in Maths and working in mixed ability groups to discover its many patterns.  This idea of mixed groups has emerged as a result of the student recommendations made through the Maths survey that Year 6 created and implemented.  It is great to see our Maths learning put into practice in the real world.

We have been spending time refining our speeches and writing a final response essay to our novel 'Wonder'.

We also had an author visit from Mr Marten Chatterton who was a skilled illustrator as well and was incredibly entertaining.  I'm sure he inspired some budding writers and illustrators as well.

We also had 3 brave representatives (Chloe R, Karishma and Carla) present to staff at the staff meeting this week Year 6's compiled data, analysis and recommendations resulting from the Maths Survey.  They all spoke eloquently and had the attention of the staff from start to finish.  Bravo girls - well done.  Many teachers made comment to me afterwards about how well they presented and communicated their ideas.

Students need to complete entry of books on their Student Reading Record (SRR) by the 31st of August to be eligible for the award of a certification of their efforts.

A Snapshot of the busy learning in Year 6

Well it has been a busy couple of weeks.

We have had Science Week when we had the amazing visit from Ruben Meerman, the Surfing Scientist (videos in previous blog post); we have been preparing for and have run our first Peer Support session on anti-bullying; we have been celebrating Book Week through our Art display in the Hall, and will have authors visiting next week; and we have been conducting an investigation into the student perceptions of their own Maths Learning here at school; and we have been spending time helping our Kindy buddies with their science unit on Living Things by helping them make Grass Heads.  Phew!

That's all on top of our regular learning about Indigenous History, Comprehension Strategies in Reading Groups, Perspectives and Visual Literacy in English, and identifying and recording number patterns in Maths.  I hope you enjoy the images below of some of the many activities mentioned above. Book Week 2018 is finally here!

Join in the fun 'me hearties' and come and listen to a book taster reading at lunch time in the Hub, Flexi Room or Stretch Zone.

Bring your Treasure Map and get it stamped for each visit for a chance to win treasure at the end of the week!

Science Week Visit from the Surfing Scientist

On Tuesday of this week we were lucky enough to have Ruben Meerman - The Surfing Scientist join us and share some incredible experiments with laser light technology and liquid nitrogen.  There are three short videos below that are just a snippet of what we saw and learnt.  It was super fun, and the students learnt so much.  Ask your child what they remember and what it taught them about the world of science...

Calling all students - Science Week competitions

All students - test your inner scientist this week and join in the Daily Science quiz, or try your hand in construction and engineering opportunities in Makerspace on Monday!

Daily quizzes - listen to the questions at assembly and write your answer on a slip of paper, add your name and class, and post it in the box near the FlexiRoom.

Book Week is coming!

Parents are invited to bring their children to the Scholastic Book Fair in the Hall on Wednesday, 22 August or Thursday 23 August. At the same time, take the opportunity to view student Book Week artworks in the Hall or the Art Room.

GD Cake Stall a big success!

Well done to all of Year 6 for the amazing amount of cakes and cookies that they prepared and sold at the Cake Stall last Tuesday.
Their great efforts managed to raise $301.90 to donate to Bear Cottage.

Congratulations to all the students for owning this fundraiser and doing it all from start to finish.  The baking, the packaging, the selling and the tidy up.  Many thanks to the parents who helped with set up, clear away and the money sorting and counting.  An amazing effort by all involved.
