Notice About Year 6 Hoodies

There have been some recent queries from parents wanting to pay for the Year 6 hoodies through TryBooking but haven’t been able to select a size.

Please note that sizes have already been determined in class and the Trybooking link is only for payment.  So please go ahead and complete payment knowing that students have tried on sizes in class and the right amount of each size will be provided.

We hope this helps to clarify the system.

ICE CREAM DAY TOMORROW!

Dear Year 6,

Don't forget that tomorrow is Ice Cream Day, so bring in your $2 to buy an ice cream and support our own fundraising efforts.  We will meet up in the classroom at 8am to assign roles for the day and to begin the set up process.  I will need 2-3 willing people to be at the steps from 8:10am waving the signs around to remind students as they exit their cars.  If you think you would be good at that then please let me know in the morning.

It will be a great day for us to work on our collaboration skills and to support each other as a team.  No job is too small to help with - so bring your 'can do' attitude and it will be a HUGE success.

Premiers Reading Challenge & Book Fair Starts 6 March!

It Here! The NSW Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) starts on Monday 5 March and to launch the reading initiative the school is holding a Book Fair.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the Learning Hub Tuesday - Thursday 6-8^th March from 8.00-830 and 2.30-3.00.

Your children will be enrolled on the PRC website and your child will be able to log in and start recording books read from 6 March.

K-2 students – you can read the books on your own, read them with someone, or someone can read them to you. If your child is reading simple chapter books they can attempt the 3-4 challenge – please let Mrs Duffy know if this is your child.

3-6 students – you must read the books on your own, but someone can help you choose them.

The Learning Hub team is gathering all the PRC books we hold so you will easily find some titles with us but a visit to your local library will be required to access the vast majority of books – there are over 1500 book titles for each age group!

Students will receive a Certificate for each year they complete the Challenge:

                                             

The online Student Reading Record must be completed by 31 August 2018 (11.59) to complete the Challenge.

If your child meets the challenge target, their certificate will have their name and school printed on it and the Honour Roll has names listed by alphabetical order but does not mention your school name. 

If you do not want your child to receive a certificate or be on the Honour Roll, you must not enter any books in your online Student Reading Record.

By entering this challenge, your child is declaring that they have read the books entered in accordance with their school year rules.

share new books with them.

Science Fun!

This week in Year 6 we have been having fun with our Science Rotations. We have been investigating the different properties of matter, such as density, solubility and thermal conduction.  Ask your children what each of those terms is describing.  They carried out simple investigations to compare the observable properties and behaviour of some solids and liquids, and used their powers of deduction and analysis to answer questions about substances.

In assembly today we were inspired by Mr Beddingfield to never give up in our learning as Jarryd Hughes never gave up on his skiing and boarding skills.  We also learned about our next focus disposition of collaboration from Mrs Batten, by using Mr Potato Head as a guide.  We also promoted next week's Ice Cream Day fundraiser with a great announcement from Marley and Chloe.

ICE CREAM DAY!

Hello all,

Our very first Year 6 fundraising event is scheduled for next Wednesday 28th February (Week 5), and it is the fabulous Ice Cream Day.  Year 6 are excited and ready to distribute the attached flyer around the school from tomorrow.  We will announce the event at morning lines and generally promote it around the school, as well as be instrumental in running it on the day - with the amazing support of our fabulous parents of course!

Reading 'Little Brother'

Building field knowledge & context:
In your Literature groups allocate the following tasks to members of the group.

1. Locate Cambodia on a map – this website compares the size of Cambodia and Australia and record some of the facts/statistics that stand out to you from ‘If Cambodia were your home instead of Australia you would...’
2. The above site also provides a brief history, including the Khmer Rouge rule and atrocities committed against the local Cambodians (Khmer). Using the map of Cambodia (& surrounding countries of Laos, Vietnam and Thailand) – mark the places mentioned in the novel ‘Little Brother’as you read. e.g. Sambour (the village they lived in north of Phnom Penh on the Mekong River) Phnom Penh, the Mekong River, Angkor, Siem Reap, Sisophon, and Aranyaprathet in Thailand, near the Cambodian border. 3. Locate pictures on the internet of Cambodian jungle, overgrown temples, rice paddies to begin with. As we read on, find pictures of Angkor, old bicycles, Cambodian refugee camps – Nong Samet, villages, etc. We will add these pictures to our wall display so that you are able to get a sense of the journey Vithy is making, through his country and its history.

The Benefits of Music

Music enriches a child’s life. Research has found that music enhances other areas by facilitating learning. It’s more than the voice singing or the fingers playing an instrument. Music taps into multiple skills sets, often simultaneously eg. using eyes and ears as well as large and small muscles. Musical training physically develops the part of the left side of the brain involved with processing language. Linking familiar songs to new information can also help imprint information on young minds. As teachers we often sing times tables, or the Thrass rap, to enhance learning. Research indicates the brain of music students works differently to that of non-music students. Apparently children involved in music have larger growth of neural activity because more of the brain is used when playing an instrument or singing. Research has also found a causal link between music and spatial intelligence. This means understanding music can help children visualise various elements which should go together, like they would do when solving a maths problem. These skills are used when solving multistep problems in engineering, maths, art, gaming, IT and architecture. It doesn’t end there: along with better performance results on concentration-based tasks, music training can help with basic memory recall. Music is also associated with other cognitive strengths such as verbal recall proficiency. People who have had formal musical training tend to be better at remembering verbal information stored in memory. So, get very excited when your child tells you they enjoy music! The benefits are greater than you imagine!

MakerSpace Years 3-6

Year 3-6 Makerspace 

Week 3 saw the start of the Bayview Clubs and these delightful students challenged their listening and verbal skills. 

Students had to engineer an 'item' that they couldn't see and had to rely on the expert description provided by their buddy.

What a Week!

This week has certainly been a busy one - with Parent Information Night on Monday, the Swimming Carnival Wednesday, our first PISA sport sessions and our Student Leader Induction Assembly on Friday.  We also managed to squeeze in the following.

• We investigated the properties of states of matter and had an interesting discussion about Ooblek and whether matter can be both a solid and a liquid at the same time.   Thank you to Will for bringing in the Ooblek.
• We also looked at what makes a number prime or composite, and what the characteristics of prime numbers are and how it is useful to know this when working with numbers.
• We wrote a narrative about getting to school and the teacher being nowhere to be found.
• We had two sessions this week on the Graduation Diploma with Mrs Ruiz.  Please spend some time talking about this over the weekend.
• We spent time reading with our Kindy buddies today
• We revised using Canvas as an interactive learning environment and commented on each others' thinking routines on the Graduation Diploma.
