A busy two weeks of learning

Well the term has started at 'full steam ahead'.  In English we have chosen our novels for study, and did some practice on how we were going to run our Book Clubs.  We read the first chapter of Bridge to Terabithia as a class, and then worked with a partner to come up with some good investigative questions.  We agreed that good questions need to require more than a yes or no answer, they will consider aspects of character, relationships, language and setting.  More likely than not they will be the How? and Why? questions, rather than the Where? When? What? questions.  I am looking forward to working with the students as they explore their chosen texts.

In Maths, we have been considering the probability of events being likely or unlikely.  We have played several games testing out our predictions of the probable outcomes.  One game in particular peaked our interest, as we discussed what happens to probability when we change the variables.  We made predictions in pairs as to whether or not changing the variable would change the outcome, then we then played the card game and tested our ideas.  The results became clearer when all the groups came together and shared their results, it was then that the patterns emerged more clearly.  There are several photos below of our investigations.

Last Friday we also had the IPSHA Debating Gala Day, at which our three teams all did an excellent job and represented St Luke's with pride.  Out of three debates we had one win, and two very close losses, both of which the adjudicators agreed were difficult and close debates.  Well done to all who took part.  We also have had our second session today of Beach Sports and are loving learning about surfing.

Our Graduation Diploma Expo is on this coming Thursday.  If for any reason you have not received the email from me with regard to 'bump in' timings and all the details, please do not hesitate to send me an email and I will get it to you straight away.  Please note that if your child has heavy items to bring in, please ensure you bring enough hands to help move the object and also remove the object at the end of the event.  We have to 'bump out' of the hall from 5pm on the Thursday as we need to set up the space for Assembly the next morning.  I am looking forward to seeing you all over the next week and on Thursday.
